Hi, I’m Amber Chen (陈映蕾, Chen-Ying-Lei). I am currently a research assistant in the Interactive Structures Lab at Carnegie Mellon University's (CMU) Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII), where I am advised by Prof. Alexandra Ion. I hold a Master of Science in Design: Robotics and Autonomous Systems from the University of Pennsylvania, where was affiliated with the Autonomous Manufacturing Lab under the mentorship of Prof. Robert Stuart-SmithI am actively seeking opportunities for a PhD for Fall 2025!

My research interests lie at the intersection of human-computer/robot interaction, digital fabrication and material science.  I am passionate about exploring how human interactive with intelligent systems can create novel forms of interaction.

My previous research has primarily centered on physical dynamic interaction technologies, particularly in programmable matter interfaces and robotic manufacture.
